Om Raut is an Indian writer-director.

Currently, Om is working on a magnum opus period-action film titled “Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior”. The film will have superstar Ajay Devgn portraying the role of legendary warrior Taanaji Malusare, who was Chhatrapati Shivaji’s closest friend, confidant and a Subedar in the Maratha army. The first look poster of the film was released on 20th July 2017. The film is slated to release on 2019.

His mother, Neena Raut is a National Award winner film and TV producer, and his father, Bharatkumar Raut, is a senior journalist, well-known author, and a successful member of The Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha). His grandfather J.S. Bandekar (1925-2017) was a renowned documentary filmmaker and editor, who has won several National Awards as well as acclaims and mentions at the Cannes Film Festival.

Om was actively involved in theatre plays and ad films during his childhood and made his feature film-acting debut with Karamati Coat (1993). The film went onto be screened across various film festivals and garnered accolades from all across the globe.

After getting the Bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering from Mumbai University he shifted to U.S.A to pursue post-graduation from Syracuse University, New York. Notable alumni of Syracuse University include Aaron Sorkin, Joe Biden and Jerry Stiller among many other prominent celebrities.

He started off his career as a writer and director for MTV Networks, NY. After his successful stint in the US, he decided to move back to India to be the vice-president of creative business at Valuable Group, promoters of UFO-Moviez, world’s largest satellite-based digital distribution platforms.

“I always thought that something in life should be beneficiary and towards the betterment and development of the country and as a filmmaker, entertainment was my tool. I wanted to do films in India and unless you are popular in the lane you are residing, you are not satisfied with the recognition. I wanted to be known in my own country,” Om said in an interview.

Later, Om headed the creative division of DAR Motion Pictures and was indispensable in producing critically acclaimed film like City of Gold (2010 film) & Haunted – 3D. The latter became the highest box office opener ever for an Indian horror film.

In 2012, Along with his mother Neena Raut, he co-founded Neena Raut Entertainment. Their first feature film production was “Lokmanya: Ek Yugpurush”. The film is based on the life story of Bal Gangadhar Tilak – a social reformer and the freedom fighter of the Indian independence movement. It was Om’s dream project and also marked his directorial debut. He spent three years into research and planning for the film and it took seven months to shoot the entire film. Talking about his inspiration behind taking up a topic like the life of Tilak, he said, “We live in a fractured state as our country is divided and we don’t have a socio political leader to come up to in any demographic region. At least one third of any division is not represented by any leader. Lokmanya Tilak’s ideology was to bring the nation together to fight against the British. I wanted to inspire the youth to unite through this film.” Om recreated the era from 1880 to 1940 through the film focusing on the life of the leader.

The film had a stellar star cast comprised of acclaimed Marathi actor Subodh Bhave, Chinmay Mandlekar and Priya Bapat in pivotal roles. It was released on 2 January 2015 and was equally loved by audience and critics. The film proved to be a commercial success and fetched him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director.

On 20th July, Om announced magnum opus period-action film, titled ‘Taanaji-The Unsung Warrior‘, starring Ajay Devgn. The film is slated to release in 2019.
